Thanks for your positive answer to my post. I do know there are many people who have been put in the same position, as I have ended up with birds from people who actually lost their jobs and their homes...this indeed is a very problematic time for individuals and families and anyone with beloved pets. I am glad for you that you were able to transition thru this very terrible and sad period and come out a stronger person. That is positive and your new strength will help make your future better, no matter what you encounter along the way. As a person who is past middle age and who has lived thru various extremely difficulty life events, I do appreciate the pain and grief that you have experienced and I hope that future events will be more positive and bring new joys to you and yours.

Hello Laurella,

Yes, many others have been in our situation, and unfortunately there will be others in the future in similar situations, this is part of "the human condition", situations beyond our control happen in our lives. And, unfortunately our "situations" affect everyone in our lives, including our beloved pets.

As you can tell by what I wrote this was not a situation I took, or take to this day, lightly. Because of the surrounding circumstances I knew my situation was not one that was going to be cured in a short period of time. In fact I had no idea how long it would be until my husband and I would stabilize. And let's be realistic, there are many, many people in our age bracket (middle age) that are still not stabilized from the economic down turn from 2008. Not knowing if my health would stabilize, due to my genetic disorder, and not knowing if my husband would find work, or where he would find work, temporary care for our flock was not an option that provided THEM stability. And stability for THEM is what we wanted. We THREW OUT our OWN emotions for THEIRS. We found what we thought was a competent and reliable sanctuary to handle the transition and relied upon them to find our flock new and permanent homes each and every one of our birds could settle into for stability as quickly as possible without having to wonder IF we would be taking them back in weeks, months or years.

This will be all I will be explaining about our situation Laurella, because my very heart and soul was ripped out of me for having to do what I thought at the time was best for my flock. I have agonized over this ever since that time. I have beat myself up and I have carried the guilt. Now it is time for me to move forward, emotionally heal, and help birds in the best way I can, to honor my not-forgotten flock by the research I do and the information I provide to the avian community. After what I experienced my love and respect for exotic birds has only deepened, not lessened. I have not become weaker because of my experience, I have become more decisive. This is why much of the community work I offer, I do free of charge.

As for your opinions surrounding other comments you have made regarding overpopulation, birth control, sustainability, etc, etc, I respect your opinions, however they are just that your opinions, mixed in with some loose unqualified facts, and you are entitled to them, I grant you that. Our blog here is not set up to deal with political issues, it is purely for the exchange of information regarding the care of those companion birds that are already in the mainline of pet commerce. All of us have our opinions as to whether exotic birds should have ever been brought into the market for commercial exchange in the first place, as to whether "domestication" should be attempted on such intrinsically "wild" creatures. But the fact remains that they are here now and we, as a collective whole, must learn how to properly care for them so that they may experience some kind of quality life sharing enclosures with us humans. So this will be all I have to say about any political matters surrounding the issue about exotic birds and how they come to be enmeshed and entangled in our very complex but real daily lives.

Thank you for stopping by and contributing to our blog.

Warm Regards,
Machelle

I forgot to mention...when these people in the countries of origin of parrots and other birds do not catch birds for sale as pets locally or for export, they are caught for FOOD. African greys, macaws, Pesquets, even tiny finches are caught and stuck on a skewer while still alive...and cooked over a fire for food. The point here is that all wildlife is considered usable by people...that is why the bush meat trade is so widespread...monkeys, and any animal large enough to eat is being taken. Whole areas of the jungle are now SILENT according to the biologists who visit these areas. What to do?

Well, as I said...human population expansion is the problem. Even our economy in the US depends on an ever expanding population...building new homes, selling more cars, etc. It is the way the present economic model works in civilized society. Now, in more primitive societies, the people don't work at the local automobile manufacturing company, they seek survival by using wildlife, growing yams, etc. and that is where our dear parrots come into the picture....for food or export...which would you think the parrot would prefer? Death or a potential life somewhere in the world? Yes. It is very very sad.

I am very sorry you lost your birds. Many others in your situation have also had this problem. But, Why didn't you sign the parrots over to a rescue for TEMPORARY CARE...so that you could get them back? People do that. Some rescues and sanctuaries do that.

And all these comments about parrots being snatched from the wild...why do you think that is the case? It is the case because local people are POOR and their wildlife provides them with some income.

That is what happens...overpopulation of people, no birth control, families of ten kids, someone has to bring home the food or money for food...so birds and animals and plants are being taken from the wild because they have value. This will continue as long as humans keep expanding their population and needing food for their children. What is the answer? Well, no one wants to address the human population expansion...no one. Not the churches. Not the politicians. No one. That big problem is going to be the eventual extinction of the human race, along with every living thing that is saleable or edible on the planet. Sad to say. But, that is the future we face unless humans realize they simply must maintain a SUSTAINABLE population, not an ever expanding one.

Hi Carla!

I am so happy you enjoy and learn from my blog!

I really can't tell you why your dear feathered friend likes the cool feel of the glass so much. Avian behavior is something that is still much of a mystery to many of us, we can only guess why they do the things they do!

Are there any other birds that do this? I guess you would need to ask a variety of bird lovers...I know one bird I have loves frozen berries, although I try to at least warm them up to room temperature before feeding them because birds have a much warmer internal temperature than we do, they average between 103 and 105 degrees F.

Thank you for stopping by to read my blog, I hope I continue to spark your interests!

Warmly,

I love your blog. I learn from every article and am going to try this recipe for my feather mangling Goffins Cockatoo. She is a sweet & funny bird. She loves ice & frozen corn. She will rub her beak up & down a cold glass & lick up bits of ice. The corn is like a treat for her. We don't give her much. .. I wonder why she is like that. Any ideas? Are there any other birds who do this?

Hello Miriam!

We are planning on re-opening our food department in about a year. Right now I am busy re-formulating the recipes based on new research information I have run across. Plus we are now selling our toys to help raise the funds to re-stock our food department, our most expensive department. Please, please help us raise our funding for the food department by purchasing our toys and telling others to do so too! There's lots of information on the home page of our blog about where you can purchase the toys. Both on our toy website and at Ebay too!

Thank you so very much for your continued interest and support!

Warmly,
