BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!® — How to feed this wholesome food!
Always when we begin feeding a new food to our bird(s) we wonder how to feed it. Our company wanted to address some of the questions you may have regarding transitioning your bird over to BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!®
Remember: If your bird doesn't begin eating Origins Wild Diet!® right away, have patience and keep placing it in your bird's bowl every day. Bird's are skeptical by nature; they take a long time to become acquainted with new foods, new environments, new toys, etc. But if your bird isn't at least nibbling on Origins Wild Diet! two months after placing it in its bowl DAILY, then contact us for more pointers, don't give up. How much do I feed to my bird?
Because our foods are made from fresh, wholesome and pure† ingredients and are not full of ingredients that contain starch and gluten, you can feed this food as a “free-feed”, meaning that you can place as much as your bird will consume in a day in your bird’s bowl without worrying that your bird will become obese.
At BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!® we believe in and use the “free-feeding” method with our own Providence Exotic Parrot Sanctuary residents.
How long can I leave BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!® out in the bowl?
You may leave BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!® out all day without worry of it spoiling. However we recommend that it is not left sitting in direct sunlight or in temperatures higher than 80 degrees Fahrenheit due to the delicate nature of the live, active digestive enzymes as well as the omega fats in the food.
Do I need to refrigerate BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!®?
No, as long as you store the packages in your shady pantry out of direct sunlight and temperatures do not exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Can I refrigerate BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!®?
Yes, but refrigeration is not necessary as long as the food is kept in a shady, dry pantry below 80 degrees Fahrenheit. We suggest that you make absolutely sure no moisture forms on the inside of the package, this can cause the live and active enzymes to begin fermenting; this can result in soured or spoiled food. Do not freeze our foods, doing so will compromise the long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids found in the Krill Oil. Krill Oil is a fairly new ingredient we have decided to add to our foods for its ability to cross the brain blood barrier aiding in the production of essential neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dompamine and norepinephrine. We do not suggest that you add Krill Oil as a supplement to your bird's diet however because such small, incremental amounts are needed it is easy to over-supplement; the amount we supply in our foods is sufficient.
How long is BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!® good unopened and after I open a package?
We suggest using all of your BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!® supply by the date on the package; it is normally considered safe and nutritious for 6 months from the time it was produced. Once you open a package we suggest you use the entire contents of the package within 30 days to ensure freshness and the nutritional levels of all nutrients.
Should I feed, or can I feed other foods while I am feeding BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!®?
You can feed other fresh foods, yes. However we advise not feeding two or more separate brands of bird foods because the nutrient profile for your bird will not be stable due to the fact that every food producer formulates their food differently. But we do highly suggest that you feed additional fresh foods to your bird while feeding our foods to ensure variety in your bird’s diet.
May I moisten BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!® before feeding?
Yes! Moisture actually helps drive nutrients into the cellular level of the mucus lining of our birds’ digestive tract. However if you decide to feed our foods moistened please follow FDA’s guidelines and remove any leftover food within 2 hours after serving to protect your bird from any possible bacterial pathogens as a result of oxygen exposure. The ratio of OWD to filtered water is about 1 cup food and ¼ cup water. Allow to soak for about 5 minutes before feeding.
Should I feed, or can I feed other foods while I am feeding BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!®?
You can feed other fresh foods, yes. However we advise not feeding two or more separate brands of commercial bird foods because the nutrient profile for your bird will not be stable due to the fact that every food producer formulates their food differently. But we do highly suggest that you feed additional fresh foods to your bird while feeding our foods to ensure variety in your bird’s diet. It is best to feed organic, fresh mango, papaya, green bananas, tender greens such as cilantro, parsley, dandelion greens, and sprouted seed, limited legumes and limited grains.
What changes can I expect from feeding BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!®?
Within a couple of weeks you should begin to notice a change in your bird’s droppings if you have been feeding a highly processed food and switching to a more “whole-food” based diet like BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!® After on our foods for awhile you should begin to see three distinct parts to your bird’s droppings; the feces, the urates(white part) and the urine. The feces should be well-formed like a slender worm and dark. The urates should be bright white to slightly yellow depending on your bird’s health. The urine should be clear. In addition you may see your bird begin to lose some weight, but then gain it back as your bird stabilizes on the food. This is normal. It usually indicates that a bird is losing “fat” weight and gaining “muscle” weight back on. Eventually your bird’s weight will normalize, usually within 3 or so months.
How do I transition my bird to BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!® and what do I do if my bird will not eat this food?
The transitioning instructions are on the back of each package. We encourage our customers to follow those recommendations. If your bird will not first accept BirD-elicious! Origins Wild Diet!® we encourage you to move slower with the transition and allow full exposure to our foods for at least three months before you give up. Please do not feed any additional foods, such as added berries, fruit, seed, nuts, or any additional treats, only the staple diet your are weaning your bird off from during the transition so that your bird will have room in its digestive tract to allow enough hunger to spark the desire to try a new food. IF your bird refuses to transition using the slow transition guide, and IF your bird is normally healthy in all manners you can try removing all foods except for OWD. Healthy birds can go up to 72 hours with no food as long as they have plenty of clean, fresh drinking water available at all times.
